Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The body rolls along like the little ball a dung beetle pushes.

The beloved soul goes down to the pool to wash itself clean.

The loving soul heads to the water to come out clean and new.
The deeper layer

After rolling along like a beetle's ball, the beloved soul heads down to the water to wash clean.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. It is where the journey turns toward washing clean.

Jaisay pankat tharootit haaNktee: like the ball a dung beetle pushes along, the body keeps rolling, nudged forward step by step. Then comes the heart of it. Sar Dhovan chaalee laadulee — the beloved soul goes down to the pool to wash itself clean.

Think of jumping into a cool lake after a long, dusty day. You come out fresh and new. That is the turn in this shabad: from being pushed along to heading, with love, toward the water that makes us clean.

A Question to Sit With
