Eyes Fixed on the Hanging Basket

ਛੀਕੇ ਪਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਡੀਠਿ ॥
chheekay par tayree bahut deeth.
Your gaze is fixed on the basket in the cupboard.
ਮਤੁ ਲਕਰੀ ਸੋਟਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਰੈ ਪੀਠਿ ॥੩॥
mat lakree sotaa tayree parai peeth. ||3||
Watch out - a stick may strike you from behind. ||3||

In plain words

Your eyes are fixed on the basket hanging up in the kitchen.

Watch out, or a stick may whack you from behind.

Scheming to grab what is not yours tends to bounce right back.
The deeper layer

When your eyes are fixed on grabbing, you miss what is coming. Chheekay par tayree bahut deeth — your gaze is fixed on the basket hung up high in the kitchen. Then comes the warning: watch out, a stick may strike you from behind. Kabir keeps it comic, in his earthy style, not scary.

Think of a cartoon character staring up at a pie and stepping right onto a rake. Greed looks one way and forgets to look around.

A Question to Sit With

What usually happens inside you after you take something you were not supposed to?
