Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 102
Verse 3 of 7

Even the Days on the Calendar

ਮੈਲੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾਇ ਕੈ ਈਸ ॥
mailay barahmandaa-i kai ees.
The rulers of kingdoms are polluted.
ਮੈਲੇ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਦਿਨ ਤੀਸ ॥੨॥
mailay nis baasur din tees. ||2||
Nights and days, and the days of the month are polluted. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The rulers of kingdoms are stained.

The nights and the days, all thirty days of the month, are stained.

No day is “luckier” or “purer” than another — every day is yours to fill with good.
The deeper layer

Power leaves the stain where it is, and every day on the calendar is the same.

Mailay barahmandaa-i kai ees: even the great rulers are stained. People also marked certain days as pure or lucky and others as unlucky. Mailay nis baasur din tees: nights and days, all thirty days of the month, are stained. There is no magically clean date, just as there is no magically clean person. That frees you from worry about lucky timing.

A Question to Sit With

Do you ever hear people call a day “lucky” or “unlucky”? What do you think makes a day good?
