Even the Holy Robes

ਮੈਲੇ ਸਿਵ ਸੰਕਰਾ ਮਹੇਸ ॥
mailay siv sankraa mahays.
Shiva, Shankara and Mahaysh are polluted.
ਮੈਲੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਖ ॥੪॥
mailay siDh saaDhik ar bhaykh. ||4||
The Siddhas, seekers and strivers, and those who wear religious robes, are polluted. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Shiva, Shankara and Mahesh, great names people bow to, are stained.

The Siddhas with their powers, the seekers who strive, and those who wear holy robes are stained too.

A holy robe is still just cloth — it isn't where purity comes from.
The deeper layer

Holy rank and holy robes cannot make anyone as spotless as the One.

Kabir names revered forms of the divine, Siv, Sankraa, Mahays, and religious people, sidh, saadhik, bhaykh: adepts with special powers, strivers, and robe-wearers. Bhaykh means religious dress. Dressing the part, holding a rank, even being a famous holy figure, does not by itself make anyone spotless. The point is aimed at spiritual pride and empty show, respectfully, and at no one's faith.

A Question to Sit With

Why might someone wear a “holy costume” and still not be kind inside? What matters more?
