Verse 2 of 5

The Cold Shoulder to the Empty-Handed

ਜਉ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਸਰਧਨ ਕੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
ja-o nirDhan sarDhan kai jaa-ay.
When the poor man goes to the rich man,
ਆਗੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਪੀਠਿ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥੧॥
aagay baithaa peeth firaa-ay. ||1||
and sits right in front of him, the rich man turns his back on him. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When a poor person goes to the home of a rich person

and sits right in front of them, the rich person turns their back.

Wealth can make a heart turn its back; that's the world's coldness, not your worth.
The deeper layer

Wealth can make a heart turn its back on someone with little.

Ja-o nirdhan sardhan kai jaa-ay, aagay baithaa peeth firaa-ay: when the poor visit the rich and sit before them, the rich turn their backs. You can feel the cold shoulder. Kabir sets up a simple picture, and the next verse shows its mirror.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

How do you think it feels to be turned away like that? What would you want to do differently?
