Such is the charm of Maya, my brothers and sisters.
As many living beings as there are, that many it has fooled.
The pull of maya, the glitter of passing things, is so charming that it fools every living being.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad; the other verses grow out of it. Maa-i-aa aisee mohnee bhaa-ee: mohnee means a charm that enchants you, and bhaa-ee means "brothers and sisters." Jaytay jee-a taytay dehkaa-ee: as many living beings as there are, that many are fooled.
The pull reaches everyone, even the smartest. Think of a magic trick. Even grown-ups who know it is a trick still gasp. Just naming the pull out loud is the first step to seeing past it.
