The Ones Who Let Go Cross Over

ਜੀਤੋ ਬੂਡੈ ਹਾਰੋ ਤਿਰੈ ॥
jeeto boodai haaro tirai.
The victorious are drowned, while the defeated swim across.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੈ ॥
gur parsaadee paar utrai.
By Guru's Grace, one crosses over and is saved.
ਦਾਸੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥

Slave Kabir speaks and teaches:
ਕੇਵਲ ਰਾਮ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥੬॥੧੪॥
kayval raam rahhu liv laa-ay. ||3||6||14||
remain lovingly absorbed, attuned to the Lord alone. ||3||6||14||

In plain words

The ones who win are drowned, and the ones who lose swim across.

By the Guru's grace, a person crosses over to the far shore.

Kabir says, as a humble servant, to help you understand:

stay lovingly tuned to the One alone.

Sometimes the ones who let go are the ones who make it across.
The deeper layer

The ones who grab to win sink, and the ones who let go cross over.

Jeeto boodai haaro tirai: the victorious drown, the defeated swim. Kabir flips the world's scoreboard: the ego's "winning," all that grabbing and pushing ahead, weighs you down, while "losing," letting go of haumai, lets you cross. Gur parsaadee paar utrai: by the Guru's grace one crosses over. Daas kabeer: Kabir calls himself a servant. Kayval raam rahhu liv laa-ay: remain lovingly absorbed in the One alone.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a time when letting go turned out to be a win?
