Rituals Alone Miss the Season

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Bhairao, Third Mehl:
ਕਲਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
kaljug meh baho karam kamaahi.
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, many rituals are performed.
ਨਾ ਰੁਤਿ ਨ ਕਰਮ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
naa rut na karam thaa-ay paahi. ||1||
But it is not the time for them, and so they are of no use. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In this dark age, people perform many, many rituals.

But this is not their season, so the rituals bear no fruit, like seeds planted at the wrong time of year.

Ceremonies without heart are seeds in the wrong season.
The deeper layer

Rituals done out of season bear no fruit; the seed that grows now is planted in the heart.

Kaljug meh baho karam kamaahi: in this age, many karam, rites, are performed. Naa rut na karam thaa-ay paahi: it is not their rut, their season, so they are not accepted. The critique is aimed at empty form in any tradition, never at any people or faith.

A Question to Sit With

When has doing the motions of something felt empty, and what was missing?
