Whose Is It

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਕਹਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
jee-o pind tan Dhan sabh parabh kaa saakat kahtay mayraa.
Soul, life, body and wealth all belong to God, but the faithless cynics claim that they own them.
ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਮੈਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
ahaN-buDh durmat hai mailee bin gur bhavjal fayraa. ||3||
They are proud and arrogant, evil-minded and filthy; without the Guru, they are reincarnated into the terrifying world-ocean. ||3||

In plain words

Soul, life, body and wealth all belong to the One, but those turned away from the One say, "These are mine."

Proud and puffed up, their thinking muddy and stained, without the Guru they go round and round in the frightening ocean of the world.

Everything is a gift on loan; forgetting that is what churns the sea.
The deeper layer

Everything you have belongs to the One, and pride is what makes you say "mine."

Jee-o pind tan dhan sabh prabh kaa: soul, body and wealth, all of it is the One's. But the one who is turned away says mayraa, mine. That is ahankaar, pride, the "I made it all myself" feeling.

Think of a library book. You can carry it home and love it. But writing your name inside it doesn't make it yours. Our lives are like that. They are lent to us.

Without a guide, the Guru says, a proud person is tossed on the bhavjal, the world-ocean. It is the churning sea of coming and going, around and around. It sounds scary. With the Guru, a person is brought safely across.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you saw your belongings as gifts on loan?
