Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 54
Verse 1 of 5

Why Would I Be Sad

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 5.
Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:
ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ॥
ta-o karhee-ai jay hovai baahar.
We should feel sad, if God were beyond us.
ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਰਹਰਿ ॥
ta-o karhee-ai jay visrai narhar.
We should feel sad, if we forget the Lord.
ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਏ ॥
ta-o karhee-ai jay doojaa bhaa-ay.
We should feel sad, if we are in love with duality.
ਕਿਆ ਕੜੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੧॥
ki-aa karhee-ai jaaN rahi-aa samaa-ay. ||1||
But why should we feel sad? The Lord is pervading everywhere. ||1||

In plain words

We would have reason to be sad if the One were outside, far away from us.

We would have reason to be sad if we forgot the One.

We would have reason to be sad if we loved something other than the One.

But why should we be sad, when the One is everywhere, filling everything?

Sadness assumes you are alone; look closely and you are not.
The deeper layer

Sadness would make sense if the One were far away or forgotten, and the One is everywhere.

The whole shabad is built on the word karheeai, "should we grieve?" Each verse lists a reason grief would make sense, then answers it. Doojaa bhaa-ay is the love of something other than the One, the feeling of being a separate self, cut off. Sadness quietly assumes you are alone; the last line answers that: ki-aa karheeai jaa(n) rahi-aa samaa-ay, why grieve, when the One fills everything?

A Question to Sit With

What helps you remember you are not as alone as sadness tells you?
