Loving the Shell

ਪੇਖਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਹਾਇ ॥
paykhat maa-i-aa rang bihaa-ay.
Gazing on Maya's illusion, its pleasures pass away.
ਗੜਬੜ ਕਰੈ ਕਉਡੀ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
garhbarh karai ka-udee rang laa-ay.
He loves the shell, and ruins his life.
ਅੰਧ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ਬੰਧ ਮਨੁ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
anDh bi-uhaar banDh man Dhaavai.
Bound to blind worldly affairs, his mind wavers and wanders.
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥
karnaihaar na jee-a meh aavai. ||2||
The Creator Lord does not come into his mind. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Gazing at Maya's show, a person's pleasures slip away. He falls in love with a shell worth almost nothing, and makes a mess of his life.

Tied up in blind busywork, his mind runs here and there. The Creator never comes into his mind.

Keep your eyes on the pearl inside the shell.
The deeper layer

When we chase shiny things, we can miss the treasure.

The verse uses the word ka-udee, a cowrie shell. Long ago, these small shells were used as coins worth almost nothing. Loving the shell is like getting a gift, keeping the wrapping paper, and throwing away what was inside.

The fun of chasing fades fast. The mind keeps wandering. And the quiet cost is this: karnaihaar na jee-a meh aavai — the Creator never comes to mind.

A Question to Sit With

When have you wanted the wrapping more than what was inside?
