The One Thing That Completes You

ਏਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਜੇ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
ayk vasat jay paavai ko-ay.
If someone is blessed with the singular substance,
ਪੂਰਨ ਕਾਜੁ ਤਾਹੀ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
pooran kaaj taahee kaa ho-ay.
then all of his tasks are accomplished to perfection.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
gur parsaad jin paa-i-aa naam.
One who obtains the Naam, by Guru's Grace
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੨੦॥੩੩॥
naanak aa-i-aa so parvaan. ||4||20||33||
- O Nanak, his coming into the world is certified and approved. ||4||20||33||

In plain words

If someone finds the one true treasure,

all their work is done, whole and complete.

Nanak says: whoever receives the Naam by the Guru's grace, their coming into the world is accepted.

Find the one thing that matters, and the rest arranges itself.
The deeper layer

Find the one true treasure, the Naam, and your whole life's work is complete.

Ayk vasat means the one thing. Here it is the Naam. It is like a pearl more precious than anything else. Pooran kaaj taahee kaa ho-ay — then all your tasks are made complete.

Think of the corner piece of a puzzle. Once you find it, the other pieces start to fit around it.

Gur parsaad jin paa-i-aa naam — some receive the Naam through the Guru's grace. Naanak aa-i-aa so parvaan — Nanak says their coming into the world is accepted. Parvaan means accepted and approved, a warm yes. Their life was worthwhile, and it counted.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing that, if you got it right, would make everything else easier?
