The self-willed manmukhs die, understanding nothing; they are enveloped by the darkness of evil-mindedness and ignorance.

They do not cross over the terrible world-ocean; without the Guru, they drown and die. ||6||

In plain words

Those who follow only their own minds die understanding nothing. They are wrapped in the darkness of wrong thinking and not-knowing.

They never reach the other side of the wide, wild ocean of life. Without the Guru, they carry a heavy load on their heads and sink under it.

Across life's deep waters, the Guru's teaching is a steady boat.
The deeper layer

Crossing life all on your own is hard. The Guru is the boat.

Manmukh mareh tin kichhoo na soojhai — a manmukh is a person facing only their own wants. Such a person understands nothing. Durmat agi-aan andhaaraa — they are wrapped in the dark of wrong thinking and not-knowing. It is like fog rolling in so thick you can't see your own feet.

Bhavjal paar na paavahi — bhavjal is the wide ocean of life. They cannot reach the other side. Bin gur sir bhaaraa — without the Guru, they carry a heavy load and go under.

The picture points toward rescue. The Guru's teaching is the steady boat that carries a person across to calm water.

A Question to Sit With

When something feels overwhelming, what helps you feel carried instead of sinking?
