The Soul Aches for Home and Was Held All Along

gurmat man amrit vuth-rhaa mayree jindurhee-ay mukh amrit bain alaa-ay raam.
Under Guru's Instruction, the Ambrosial Name abides within the mind, O my soul; with your mouth, utter the words of ambrosia.
amrit banee bhagat janaa kee mayree jindurhee-ay man sunee-ai har liv laa-ay raam.
The Words of the devotees are Ambrosial Nectar, O my soul; hearing them in the mind, embrace loving affection for the Lord.
chiree vichhunnaa har parabh paa-i-aa gal mili-aa sahj subhaa-ay raam.
Separated for so very long, I have found the Lord God; He holds me close in His loving embrace.
jan naanak man anad bha-i-aa hai mayree jindurhee-ay anhat sabad vajaa-ay raam. ||2||
Servant Nanak's mind is filled with bliss, O my soul; the unstruck sound-current of the Shabad vibrates within. ||2||

In plain words

Let the sweet Name live inside your mind, and let your mouth speak kind, true, life-giving words.

The words of people who love the One are like nectar — hearing them, your heart fills up with warmth.

It can feel like you have been apart from the One for a very, very long time. And then, all at once, you find that you were held close all along.

When that happens, a quiet music begins to play inside you — a happiness that needs no reason.

The soul aches to come home to its Source — and discovers it was being held close the whole time.
The deeper layer

This one says the soul that felt far from home finds it was held close all along.

Chiree vichhunnaa har parabh paa-i-aa — apart for so long, I have found the Lord. Poets call the ache of being apart viraha. The soul misses its Source like a child who has wandered far from home.

Then comes the meeting. Gal mili-aa — the One hugs the soul close. Nobody wins this hug by being clever. The soul is simply pulled into a loving embrace.

Think of a child lost in a busy mall. When a parent finally finds them, the child does not explain anything. They just get scooped up.

Anhat sabad vajaa-ay — the unstruck sound plays inside. This is music no one plays on any instrument. You hear it when the mind grows still. It is more a feeling than an idea: a quiet gladness that needs no reason, when you stop straining and simply belong.

Notice the steps. First you hear good words. Then you feel love. Then you are held. Remembering comes in through the ears and settles in the heart.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt happy for no reason at all? What was that like?
