Verse 2 of 4

Singing Together Is Itself a Coming-Home

tah anad binod sadaa anhad jhunkaaro raam.
There is bliss and ecstasy there always, and the unstruck celestial melody resounds there.
mil gaavahi sant janaa parabh kaa jaikaaro raam.
Meeting together, the Saints sing God's Praises, and celebrate His Victory.
mil sant gaavahi khasam bhaaveh har paraym ras rang bhinnee-aa.
Meeting together, the Saints sing the Praises of the Lord Master; they are pleasing to the Lord, and saturated with the sublime essence of His love and affection.
har laabh paa-i-aa aap mitaa-i-aa milay chiree vichhunni-aa.
They obtain the profit of the Lord, eliminate their self-conceit, and meet Him, from whom they were separated for so long.
geh bhujaa leenay da-i-aa keenHay parabh ayk agam apaaro.
Taking them by the arm, He makes them His own; God, the One, inaccessible and infinite, bestows His kindness.
binvant naanak sadaa nirmal sach sabad run jhunkaaro. ||2||
Prays Nanak, forever immaculate are those who sing the Praises of the True Word of the Shabad. ||2||

In plain words

In that good place there's always joy, and a quiet music plays that no one has to strum.

Loving people gather and sing together, celebrating what's good.

Their singing is beautiful to the One, and they're full of sweet affection.

They let go of the me-first feeling and meet what they'd long been missing.

The One takes them by the arm and makes them family — kind beyond reach.

Forever clean and clear are the hearts that sing the true Word.

Singing and celebrating good things together is itself a kind of coming-home.
The deeper layer

The verse describes the sat sangat — the gathering of the good — as a place of constant anand (bliss) where the anhad (unstruck melody) resounds. The image of singing together is central: joy in Sikhism is communal, sung in company. The reunion note sounds again — "they meet Him from whom they were separated so long" (the viraha resolved) — and again it's the One who acts: baanhi pakri ("taking them by the arm"). Self-conceit (haumai) is what's set down, and the reward is being made His own — belonging. For a child: singing and celebrating good things together with others is itself a kind of coming-home.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt happiest singing or celebrating together with other people?
