Some Truths Only Sink In When the Heart Is Soft

sun vadbhaagee-aa har amrit banee raam.
Listen, O most fortunate ones, to the Ambrosial Bani of the Word of the Lord.
jin ka-o karam likhee tis ridai samaanee raam.
He alone, whose karma is so pre-ordained, has it enter into his heart.
akath kahaanee tinee jaanee jis aap parabh kirpaa karay.
He alone knows the Unspoken Speech, unto whom God has shown His Mercy.
amar thee-aa fir na moo-aa kal kalaysaa dukh haray.
He becomes immortal, and shall not die again; his troubles, disputes and pains are dispelled.
har saran paa-ee taj na jaa-ee parabh pareet man tan bhaanee.
He finds the Sanctuary of the Lord; he does not forsake the Lord, and does not leave. God's Love is pleasing to his mind and body.
binvant naanak sadaa gaa-ee-ai pavitar amrit banee. ||3||
Prays Nanak, sing forever the Sacred Ambrosial Bani of His Word. ||3||

In plain words

Listen, lucky ones, to the sweet true words that carry the One.

They sink in most deeply when a heart is soft and ready.

The quiet, wordless meaning opens up to a heart touched by kindness.

Such a heart comes fully alive, and its troubles and quarrels melt away.

It finds shelter and never wants to leave; that love feels good all through.

Keep singing the sweet true words, always.

Some true things only sink in when your heart is soft and open — a hurried heart skims right past them.
The deeper layer

A verse about receiving the Bani — the sacred Word. It's given freely, but it "enters the heart" of one whose "karma is pre-ordained" — rendered gently as a heart that is soft and ready, so as not to suggest arbitrary favoritism. The "Unspoken Speech" (akath kathaa — the story that can't be told) is known "unto whom God shows mercy": the deepest things are understood not by cleverness but by a certain readiness of heart. The one who receives it "becomes immortal" — rendered as coming fully alive — and finds a shelter they never want to leave. For a child: some true things only sink in when your heart is soft and open; a hard, hurried heart just skims past them.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your heart feel soft and open, ready to really take something in?
