Loving Something Enough to Give It Your Whole Heart

ha-o vaaree vanjaa khannee-ai vanjaa ta-o saahib kay naavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I am a sacrifice, cut apart into pieces, a sacrifice to Your Name, O Lord Master. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

"I would give anything — everything — for the beautiful Name of the One I love."

That's how much it means: my whole self, offered with joy.

It's the feeling of loving something so much you'd gladly give it your whole heart.
The deeper layer

This is the rahao — the "pause" line, the refrain that holds the heart of the whole shabad. Hao vaaree vanjaa... khanneeai vanjaa — "I am a sacrifice, cut apart into pieces, a sacrifice to Your Name." The image is intense — offering oneself completely — but the feeling is joy, not grim duty: this is the overflow of a heart so full of love it wants to give everything. The qMonk voice keeps the wholehearted gladness ("I would give anything, everything") and lets go of the literal cutting-imagery for a child. The rahao is the note you return to between every verse: this is how much I love You. For a child: it's the feeling of loving someone or something so much you'd gladly give it your all.

A Question to Sit With

What do you love so much that you'd happily give it your very best?
