Sikhism·Raag Bihaagraa·Shabad 3
Verse 4 of 4

One Honest Moment of Remembrance Is Enough

at ootam har naam hai mayree jindurhee-ay jit japi-ai paap gavaatay raam.
The Name of the Lord is sublime, O my soul; chanting it, one's sins are washed away.
patit pavitar gur har kee-ay mayree jindurhee-ay chahu kundee chahu jug jaatay raam.
The Guru, the Lord, has purified even the sinners, O my soul; now, they are famous and respected in the four directions and throughout the four ages.
ha-umai mail sabh utree mayree jindurhee-ay har amrit har sar naatay raam.
The filth of egotism is totally wiped away, O my soul, by bathing in the Ambrosial Pool of the Lord's Name.
apraaDhee paapee uDhray mayree jindurhee-ay jan naanak khin har raatay raam. ||4||3||
Even sinners are carried across, O my soul, if they are imbued with the Lord's Name, even for an instant, O servant Nanak. ||4||3||

In plain words

The beautiful Name lifts you up, and remembering it, old wrongs are rinsed clean.

People who once felt like the worst can become the most respected — their whole story changes.

The puffed-up, only-me feeling gets washed away, like taking a good bath in cool clear water.

Even one honest moment of remembering, carried with love, can carry you across.

Even one honest moment of loving remembrance is enough — the door is impossibly wide, and your whole story can change.
The deeper layer

The shabad's climax is one of Gurbani's boldest claims: paapee — sinners — are not just forgiven but made jag mahi jaakhaanaa — famous and honored "in the four directions and the four ages." The reversal is total: the one who felt lowest becomes the one others look up to. The bathing image (saras naavan, bathing in the pool of the Name) washes away haumai, the me-first ego. And the final mercy is the scale of it: ik nimakh — even for an instant, even one moment of remembrance held with love, is enough to "carry across." This is the raag's generosity — the door is impossibly wide.

A Question to Sit With

Can one small good moment really matter? When has a tiny moment changed how you felt about a whole day?
