Verse 2 of 4

Good Company Is a Real Kind of Nourishment

say bhagat say sayvak mayree jindurhee-ay jo parabh mayray man bhaanay raam.
They are devotees, and they are servants, O my soul, who are pleasing to the Mind of my God.
say har dargeh painaa-i-aa mayree jindurhee-ay ahinis saach samaanay raam.
They are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord, O my soul; night and day, they remain absorbed in the True Lord.
tin kai sang mal utrai mayree jindurhee-ay rang raatay nadar neesaanay raam.
In their company, the filth of one's sins is washed away, O my soul; imbued with the Lord's Love, one comes to bear the Mark of His Grace.
naanak kee parabh bayntee mayree jindurhee-ay mil saaDhoo sang aghaanay raam. ||2||
Nanak offers his prayer to God, O my soul; joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he is satisfied. ||2||

In plain words

The people who make the One glad are simply those who love and remember.

They carry a quiet honor with them, day and night settled in what's true.

Being near them, your own heart gets lighter and cleaner, warmed by that same love.

"Let me sit with people like that," the heart prays — good company leaves it satisfied.

Sitting with people soaked in love makes your own heart lighter — good company is a real kind of nourishment.
The deeper layer

The pauri praises the bhagat and daas — the devotee and servant — as those "pleasing to the Mind of God." What makes them pleasing is not talent or status but that they "remain absorbed in the True Lord night and day." The social teaching follows: tin kai sang — "in their company, the filth of sins is washed away." This is sangat again, holy company, as a real spiritual force: who you spend time with shapes what you become, and being near people soaked in love makes your own heart lighter. The shabad ends the pauri in prayer — "joining the Saadh Sangat, he is satisfied." Satisfaction (tript) — the end of restless wanting — comes not from getting more but from good company.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who leave your heart feeling lighter and cleaner after you're with them?
