Raag Bilaaval
Commentary

Raag Bilaaval, Shabad 1, Mehl 1 (Guru Nanak)

If something is already endless, the truest praise is honest, humble, and glad, and its Name never lets go of you.

The Arc

This composition opens the Bilaaval section with the full Mool Mantar, then Guru Nanak's own posture before the boundless One. The arc: the Mool Mantar plus the confession that no title could add to the One (P0); the rahaao asking only for understanding and truthful living (P1); everything flows from You, so cleverness is beside the point (P2); words catch barely a speck of Your greatness (P3); and the luminous close, that even empty-handed the Master's Name never leaves (P4).

Key Vocabulary

  • ik-onkaar and the Mool Mantar terms: Oneness itself; sat naam, nirbha-o, nirvair, akaal moorat, ajoonee, saibhang, gur parsaad.
  • rajaai — the Will read as the flow of existence one aligns with.
  • akath — the Unsayable; words point but cannot contain.
  • til vadi-aa-ee — a sesame-seed's worth of Your greatness.
  • khasmai naa-o na jaa-ee — the Master's Name does not leave, even the empty-handed.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The shabad pairs the vastest possible opening (the Mool Mantar) with the smallest human posture (empty hands), and lands on grace that is not earned. It rhymes with the whole project's Gurprasad reading: grace is always already here; you become open to it rather than winning it.

For Raag Bilaaval

These files sit physically inside the 16-Raag-Soohee folder but are NOT Soohee. B00C1729 opens with the full Mool Mantar, which is the opening of Raag Bilaaval; this is the Bilaaval closer bridging out of Soohee. Titled as Raag Bilaaval, Shabad 1 (K2 index restarts at 1 for this bridge), independent of the Soohee shabad numbering.

Translation Notes

The stray-dog image in the final verse is rendered as honest empty-handedness, not self-contempt, per wellbeing rules; the closing line of belonging is foregrounded as the shabad's true center. "Blind" in P2 is read as smallness before the boundless. rajaai is glossed as the flow of existence rather than a command from outside.
