Raag Bilaaval
Commentary

Raag Bilaaval, Dupda, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

By what way do we reach You? By sitting with those who love You.

The Arc

The opening verse praises the Maker who makes even the fallen clean and asks to hold the One in mind for even a blink, having heard the One is found among the holy. The Rahau poses the honest question — by what path, what practice, do we reach You? The close answers through sevaa: kindness between people returns, and the support of the Name alone is enough.

Key Vocabulary

  • patit pavit: maker of the fallen clean
  • nimakh: an instant
  • sant charan: the company of the holy
  • maanukh kee sayvaa: service between people
  • tayk tayro ik naa-ee: the Name alone as support

Themes and Cross-Connections

The found-in-company answer, the reciprocity of sevaa, and purification held as hope.

For Raag Bilaaval

A gentle question-and-answer in the raag's warm register.

Translation Notes

The Rahau falls in the second unit, so the opening is verse ||1||. SSK's patit (sinner) is rendered as the fallen made clean again — hope-forward.
