Raag Bilaaval
Commentary

Raag Bilaaval, Chau-Pada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Center the scattered heart on the One; honor those who remember, let love take root, and let the thirst for one glimpse lead you home.

The Arc

A shabad about where the heart settles. It opens by gathering the scattered mind to one center, where longings come full. The Rahau honors those who remember and shows why — the fire of wanting cools as they sing. Then the life bears fruit in good company; wisdom, honor, plenty, peace, and bliss arrive together for the one who keeps the One close through every moment; and it ends in honest longing — a thirst for one glimpse that resolves into taking refuge.

Key Vocabulary

  • charan kamal si-o cheetaa: fixing the mind on the One's presence — one-pointedness
  • balihaaree: an offering of honor — I would give anything
  • jalan bujhai: the fire of desire quenched
  • safal janam: a fruitful life
  • sahj anandaa: natural, effortless bliss — part of the cluster of gifts
  • pi-aas: thirst — the ache of longing for the One's sight
  • saran: sanctuary, refuge

Themes and Cross-Connections

The compass-needle image restates the recurring Bilaaval move from scatter to center: a mind pulled a hundred ways finds rest by fixing on one point. "The fire cooled as they sing" ties to the seetal theme of the previous shabads — craving answered by remembrance, not by more craving. And the closing thirst is viraha held hopefully: longing is not treated as lack but as a reliable arrow pointing home, resolving into refuge rather than despair.

For Raag Bilaaval

Bilaaval's brightness carries both the settled center and the honest ache. The raag holds longing without gloom — the thirst here is a bright thirst, sure of the water it seeks.
