Raag Bilaaval
Commentary

Raag Bilaaval, Dupda, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

You are the breath in my breath; whatever You do, I trust it is good.

The Arc

The Rahau names the One as the support of the very life-breath, bowed to again and again. The verse follows the mind through sitting, standing, sleeping and waking, laying the whole state of the heart before the One. The close rests everything on trust: You are my shelter, strength, and family, and whatever You do is good for me.

Key Vocabulary

  • praan aDhaarai: support of the breath
  • birthaa: the heart's condition told openly
  • tum hee mayrai parvaarai: You are my family
  • jo tum karahu so-ee bhal: whatever You do is good

Themes and Cross-Connections

Intimacy (the One as family) and acceptance of hukam as good are the two hinges. Remembrance runs through ordinary life, not only set times.

For Raag Bilaaval

A warm, steady trust-song that fits the raag's mood of contentment.
