Carried Across the Ocean

I have grasped the Sanctuary of the Lord's Feet; He is the Giver of peace; through the Word of the Guru's Teachings, I meditate and chant the Chant of the Lord.

I have crossed over the world-ocean, and my doubt and fear are dispelled, says Nanak, through the glorious granduer of our Lord and Master. ||2||5||85||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I took hold of the shelter of the One who gives peace, and through the Guru's word I kept the One in mind.

Nanak says: I have been carried across the wide ocean of life — doubt gone, fear gone — all through the greatness of the One I lean on.

Held steady, you can cross water that once looked too wide.
The deeper layer

charan gahay saran sukh-daatay — grasping the shelter of the peace-giver. saagar taray bharam bhai binsay — the world-ocean crossed, doubt and fear dispelled, Thaakur partaap — by the glory of the One.

A Question to Sit With

What felt impossibly big until you got to the other side of it?
