Holding On to What Slips Away

kanik kaaminee sayj sohnee chhod khinai meh jaavat hay.
You shall have to leave behind your gold, your woman and your beautiful bed; you shall have to depart in an instant.
urajh rahi-o indree ras parayri-o bikhai thag-uree khaavat hay. ||1||
You are entangled in the lures of sexual pleasures, and you are eating poisonous drugs. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Gold, comfort, a beautiful place to rest — all of it is here one moment and gone the next.

It is easy to get tangled up chasing pleasures that leave a bad aftertaste, like swallowing something that only looked sweet.

What slips away in a moment is not worth tangling your whole self in.
The deeper layer

kanik kaaminee sayj... khinai meh jaavat — riches and comforts left in an instant. bikhai Thag-uree — the con-artist's potion of vice. All of it passes in a moment.

A Question to Sit With

How do you tell a lasting good from a quick one?
