Without devotional worship, doubt is not dispelled; the Guru has revealed this secret. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Here is the secret the Guru shares: hold on to the Naam, and the pain eases.

Love the One, and the restless doubt -- the 'what if, what if' that spins in your head -- settles down.

Peace grows when love has somewhere to flow.
The deeper layer

Here is a secret: pain and worry ease when the One lives in your heart.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad.

Har kay naam binaa dukh paavai — without the One's Name, a person finds pain. Said the other way round: with the Name, pain eases.

Bhagat binaa sahsaa nah chookai — without loving devotion, doubt does not leave. Sahsaa means doubt and worry, the "what if, what if" that spins in your head. Bhagat means loving devotion.

Gur ih bhayd bataavai — the Guru shares this secret. Bhayd means a secret. But it is an open secret, told to anyone who listens. Think of a friend showing you the trick to a puzzle. Once you know it, it is simple. When love flows toward the One, the worry settles.

A Question to Sit With

What quiets your mind when it will not stop spinning?
