Serving the Guru, Finding the Treasure

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਲਹੈ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ॥
gur sayvaa tay lahai padaarath.
Serving the Guru, the treasure is found.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥੁ ॥
hirdai naam sadaa kirtaarath.
With the Naam in the heart, one always prospers.
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
saachee dargeh poochh na ho-ay.
And in the Court of the True Lord, you shall not called to account.
ਮਾਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੀਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੬॥
maanay hukam seejhai dar so-ay. ||6||
One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, is approved at the Lord's Door. ||6||

In plain words

When you serve the Guru with a willing heart, you find a treasure that was there all along.

Keep the Naam in your heart, and you always flourish. At the True One's door, no one asks you to give an account. Whoever accepts the One's will is welcomed home, just as they are.

Accept the One's will, and you are welcomed home as you are.
The deeper layer

Serving the Guru uncovers a treasure.

Gur sayvaa tay lahai padaarath — by serving the Guru, the treasure is found. Padaarath means a precious thing. Hirdai naam sadaa kirtaarath — with the Name in the heart, a person always flourishes.

Saachee dargeh poochh na ho-ay — in the True Court, no one is called to account. Dargeh means court. It feels less like a courtroom and more like a welcome home. Maanay hukam seejhai dar so-ay — whoever accepts Hukam is welcomed at the Door. Hukam is the way the One's order flows through all things. Think of a swimmer who stops fighting the current and floats easily.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to stop fighting something and just work with it?
