Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 151
Verse 9 of 9

Everything Belongs to the One

ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ॥
rahai ateet jaanai sabh tis kaa.
He remains detached, knowing that everything belongs to God.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ॥
tan man arpai hai ih jis kaa.
He dedicates his body and mind unto the One who owns them.
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
naa oh aavai naa oh jaa-ay.
He does not come, and he does not go.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak saachay saach samaa-ay. ||8||2||
O Nanak, absorbed in Truth, he merges in the True Lord. ||8||2||

In plain words

When you know that everything, even you, belongs to the One, your grip loosens. A light, free feeling takes its place.

You offer your body and heart back to the One they came from. Such a person does not come and does not go; they stay steady. Nanak says: they merge into the True One, and they and the Truth become one.

Hold everything lightly -- it all belongs to the One anyway.
The deeper layer

Everything belongs to the One; hold it lightly, and you merge into Truth.

Rahai ateet jaanai sabh tis kaa — one stays unattached, knowing everything belongs to the One. Ateet means free, holding things lightly. Tan man arpai hai ih jis kaa — one offers body and mind to the One they belong to. Arpai means offers.

Naa oh aavai naa oh jaa-ay — such a person does not come and does not go. They stand steady. Naanak saachay saach samaa-ay — says Nanak, they merge into the True One. Saach means Truth. Think of a raindrop falling into the ocean. It becomes part of something much bigger.

A Question to Sit With

What feels different when you hold something you love with an open hand instead of a tight fist?
