I cannot live, for a moment, even for an instant, without the Name of the Lord; the Gurmukh reads the Sermon of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Naam of the One is my support.

I cannot live a moment, not even an instant, without the Naam. Turned toward the Guru, I keep reading and singing the Naam.

Some things become as necessary as breathing.
The deeper layer

The Naam is the support you lean on every moment.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Mai har har naam aDhaar rama-ee-aa: the Name is my aDhaar, my support. Think of a strong backpack strap that takes the weight so you can keep walking.

Khin pal reh na saka-o bin naavai: I cannot stay even a moment without the Name. This deep longing is a mark of Guru Ram Das's voice. Gurmukh har har paath parha-ee-aa: the gurmukh, one who faces the Guru, keeps reading and singing the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so woven into your day you would feel lost without it?
