A Longing the Doctors Can't Name

rom rom man tan ik baydan mai parabh daykhay bin need na pa-ee-aa.
Each and every hair on my head, and my mind and body, suffer the pains of separation; without seeing my God, I cannot sleep.
baidak naatik daykh bhulaanay mai hirdai man tan paraym peer laga-ee-aa. ||2||
The doctors and healers look at me, and are perplexed. Within my heart, mind and body, I feel the pain of divine love. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Every hair on my head, my mind, my whole body aches to see the One -- I can hardly even sleep.

Doctors look at me and can't figure it out. This is not that kind of sickness. It is the ache of love, and it lives in the heart.

*Some aches are not sickness at all -- they are love.*
The deeper layer

rom rom... ik baydan -- every hair carries one ache. baidak naatik daykh bhulaanay -- the physicians are baffled, because paraym peer (the pain of love) is not a bodily illness. Longing honored as a real and holy condition.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever missed someone so much it felt almost physical?
