Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, say the Naam of the One who holds and sustains the whole world.

By great good fortune I found the Guru, the True Guru, and now I sing the praises of the One of supreme joy.

The One who holds the whole world is also the source of the deepest joy.
The deeper layer

Sing the Naam of the One who holds the world, and you sing toward joy itself.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the whole shabad. Jap man har har naam gobinday — sing, O mind, the Name of the One who holds the world. Gobinday means the One who looks after all of it.

Then comes parmaananday, supreme bliss. That word tells you what you are really singing toward. It is joy itself, at its very source. And finding a true teacher to point the way feels like great good fortune.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel joyful, does it feel like the joy comes from things, or from somewhere deeper?
