Cross The Water By Letting Go Of Ego

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
aasaa mansaa jag mohnee jin mohi-aa sansaar.
Hope and desire entice the world; they entice the whole universe.
Everyone, and all that has been created, is under the domination of Death.
hukmee hee jam lagdaa so ubrai jis bakhsai kartaar.
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, Death seizes the mortal; he alone is saved, whom the Creator Lord forgives.
naanak gur parsaadee ayhu man taaN tarai jaa chhodai ahaNkaar.
O Nanak, by Guru's Grace, this mortal swims across, if he abandons his ego.
aasaa mansaa maaray niraas ho-ay gur sabdee veechaar. ||2||
Conquer hope and desire, and remain unattached; contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

In plain words

Wanting-more and wishing-for-things pull at the whole world; almost everyone feels the tug.

Everything that is made moves within the great flow of existence -- the way life simply works.

Within that flow, the one who is met by grace comes safely through.

Nanak says: by the Guru's grace, the mind crosses the wide water the moment it sets down the heavy load of ego.

Loosen your grip on wanting, rest lightly, and think on the Guru's Word -- and you float.

You cross the hardest water not by fighting it but by setting down the weight of ego.
The deeper layer

A Guru Amar Das shalok. Jam (the Messenger of Death) in the source is set aside; the terror-figure is dropped and only the liberation kept -- the mind "crosses the water" when it chhodai ahankaar (lets go of ego). Hukmee is rendered as the flow of existence, the way life works, not a command from above. The practical instruction lands last and lightest: aasaa mansaa maaray niraas ho-ay -- quiet the endless wanting, rest without grasping, and you are already carried.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you were holding onto so tightly that it was weighing you down?
