Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 188
Verse 3 of 4

Blessed Village, Blessed Home

ਧੰਨਿ ਸੁ ਗਾਉ ਧੰਨਿ ਸੋ ਠਾਉ ਧੰਨਿ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਭ ਲੋਇ ॥
Dhan so gaa-o Dhan so thaa-o Dhan puneet kutamb sabh lo-ay.
Blessed is that village, and blessed is the place of his birth; blessed is his pure family, throughout all the worlds.
jin pee-aa saar ras tajay aan ras ho-ay ras magan daaray bikh kho-ay. ||2||
One who drinks in the sublime essence abandons other tastes; intoxicated with this divine essence, he discards sin and corruption. ||2||

In plain words

Blessed is the town, blessed is the spot, blessed is the family where such a person lives. Goodness makes a whole place shine.

Once you have tasted the deep sweetness of the One, the shallow tastes lose their pull, and the things that used to weigh you down simply fall away.

One good person can make a whole place shine.
The deeper layer

Goodness makes a whole place blessed.

Dhan so gaa-o Dhan so thaa-o — blessed is that village, blessed is that place. In Ravidas's day, some neighborhoods and some people were called "impure" because of caste. Ravidas turns that upside down. The home of a loving person is the blessed place, wherever it is.

Then the second line: jin pee-aa saar ras — whoever drinks the sweetest essence. Once you have tasted the real thing, lesser cravings lose their pull. It's like eating a fresh mango after only ever having mango candy. Soaked in that taste, the harmful cravings, which the verse calls bikh or poison, simply fall away.

A Question to Sit With

Has one person ever changed the feeling of a whole room or group you were in?
