Nothing Is Mine but You

ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਹਉ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਹਿ ਨ ਮੋਰਾ ॥
mai naahee kachh ha-o nahee kichh aahi na moraa.
I am nothing, I have nothing, and nothing belongs to me.
ਅਉਸਰ ਲਜਾ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਸਧਨਾ ਜਨੁ ਤੋਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥
a-osar lajaa raakh layho saDhnaa jan toraa. ||4||1||
Now, protect my honor; Sadhana is Your humble servant. ||4||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am nothing, I have nothing, and nothing here is mine to bargain with. My hands are empty.

At this moment, please keep my honor safe. Sadhna says, I am Your own servant.

Empty hands and an honest heart are all the One asks for.
The deeper layer

Empty hands and an honest heart make the whole prayer.

Mai naahee kachh ha-o nahee kichh aahi na moraa — I am nothing, I have nothing, and nothing is mine. This isn't about feeling worthless. It means Sadhna has nothing to bargain with. Think of a little kid who hands a parent a drawing and says "for you." There is no deal, only trust.

A-osar lajaa raakh layho — at this very moment, keep my honor safe. Again the prayer asks for help right now. Then he signs his name: saDhnaa jan toraa — Sadhna is Your jan, Your own person. The whole song ends in trusting surrender.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to trust someone completely, without holding anything back?
