Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 22
Verse 3 of 4

Where The Heart Rests

ਜਾਇ ਬਸਹੁ ਵਡਭਾਗਣੀ ਸਖੀਏ ਸੰਤਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥
jaa-ay bashu vadbhaagnee sakhee-ay santaa sang samaa-ee-ai.
Go, O my very fortunate companion: dwell in the Company of the Saints, and merge with the Lord.
ਤਹ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਰੋਗੁ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
tah dookh na bhookh na rog bi-aapai charan kamal liv laa-ee-ai.
There, neither pain nor hunger nor disease will afflict you; enshrine love for the Lord's Lotus Feet.
ਤਹ ਜਨਮ ਨ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
tah janam na maran na aavan jaanaa nihchal sarnee paa-ee-ai.
There is no birth or death there, no coming or going in reincarnation, when you enter the Sanctuary of the Eternal Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਿਛੋਹੁ ਨ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੩॥
paraym bichhohu na moh bi-aapai naanak har ayk Dhi-aa-ee-ai. ||3||
Love does not end, and attachment does not grip you, O Nanak, when you meditate on the One Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Go, lucky friend, and live in the Sangat — that is where you quietly grow into the One.

In the Sangat, the aches and hungers and heaviness lose their grip, and your love settles on the One. The restless coming and going stops; you are at home. Nanak says: keep the One in mind, and love never breaks off, and the sticky pull of wanting cannot catch you anymore.

In the Sangat, your love settles, the restlessness quiets, and you finally feel at home.
The deeper layer

Go and live in the Sangat; there you grow closer to the One.

Santaa sang samaa-ee-ai — in the Sangat, you merge with the One. That is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.

Tah dookh na bhookh na rog bi-aapai — there, pain, hunger and sickness cannot take hold. The heart's love rests on the One's lotus feet, a picture of the One's gentle, beautiful presence.

The verse says there is no birth or death there, no coming and going. The restless back-and-forth stops. You arrive at a nihchal refuge, one that cannot be shaken. This is sahaj, a calm, steady peace. Think of the feeling of being tucked in at home on a stormy night.

Praym bichhohu na — this love never breaks off. And moh, the sticky pull of clinging, cannot grab a heart that is already at home.

A Question to Sit With

Where, or with whom, do you feel most completely at home in yourself?
