Verse 3 of 5

The Name, My Guardian

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ॥
raam naam ho-aa rakhvaaraa.
The Name of the Lord has become my Protector.
ਝਖ ਮਾਰਉ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
jhakh maara-o saakat vaychaaraa. ||2||
The wretched, faithless cynic makes only useless efforts. ||2||

In plain words

When you hold the One close, it becomes like a guardian standing quietly beside you. You do not have to be afraid.

Trying to go it completely alone, fighting the connection, only tires a person out. The effort spins in circles and finds no rest.

You do not have to guard your whole life alone; something steady is already watching over you.
The deeper layer

The Name becomes our guard.

Raam naam ho-aa rakhvaaraa — "the Name of the One has become my protector." Picture a lifeguard at the pool who never looks away. You can swim without fear.

Then the verse looks at the saakat, the one who turns away from the One. Jhakh maara-o means thrashing about for nothing. It is like spinning a bike's wheels in the mud: lots of effort, no moving forward. That tiredness is simply what comes from being cut off. It is not a curse placed on anyone.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most protected and safe?
