In plain words

The heart that turns toward the One and takes shelter there carries a quiet blessing. It is like good fortune written deep inside.

Nanak says: finding that closeness, everything cools and softens. Body and mind settle, the way a fever breaks and you finally feel calm and easy.

Closeness to the One cools and soothes, the way a fever breaking leaves you calm.
The deeper layer

The soul that comes to the One for shelter finds a deep, cool calm.

Saran sohaagan aa-i-aa, jis mastak bhaaga-o means "the blessed soul comes to the shelter, with good fortune marked on her brow." Saran means shelter, a safe place. Sohaagan is the happy bride, a picture the Guru often uses for any soul, whoever they are, who is close to the One. The mark on the brow means grace, a gift, not a reward for being better than others.

Kaho Naanak tin paa-i-aa, tan man seetlaaga-o means "says Nanak, she finds the One, and her body and mind are cooled." Seetal means cool and soothed.

Think of coming in from a hot, dusty playground and drinking cold water in the shade. Your whole body sighs. That coolness, seetal, is the relief this whole raag keeps returning to.

A Question to Sit With

What cools you down and soothes you when everything feels too hot inside?
