Pulled From the Fire

ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਤੇ ਕਾਢਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਜਲਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
agan saagar tay kaadhi-aa parabh jalan bujhaa-ee.
God has pulled me out of the ocean of fire, and quenched my burning thirst.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਲੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਭਏ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੨॥
amrit naam jal sanchi-aa gur bha-ay sahaa-ee. ||2||
The Guru has sprinkled the Ambrosial Water of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; He has become my Helper. ||2||

In plain words

The One reached into the burning ocean of my endless wanting and lifted me out. The One cooled the thirst that never seemed to quit.

The Guru sprinkled the nectar-water of the Naam over me and became my helper.

Endless wanting is a fire; the Name is cool water on it.
The deeper layer

Rescue comes as a gift. Agan saagar tay kaadhi-aa — God pulled me out of the ocean of fire. The fire is endless wanting, the craving that never seems to stop. Prabh jalan bujhaa-ee — God put out the burning.

Then: amrit naam jal sanchi-aa — the Guru sprinkled the nectar-water of the Name. Amrit means sweet, life-giving nectar. Gur bha-ay sahaa-ee — the Guru became my helper.

Think of a hot day at the park when someone turns on the sprinklers. Everyone runs into the cool spray and laughs. The Name cools the heart the same way. Once again the rescue is something received, a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that only leaves you wanting more, and what satisfies you?
