The Primal Lord, the Great Giver, has blessed me with the gift of fearlessness. Joining the Company of the Holy, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Again and again I serve the holy people, and I keep doing this always.

Joining the Sangat, singing the One's praises, I receive a gift from the Great Giver: fearlessness, a quiet courage where I am simply not afraid.

The Sangat gives a quiet kind of courage.
The deeper layer

Serving holy people again and again, and singing in the Sangat, brings the gift of fearlessness.

Sayvat sayv sayv saadh sayva-o means "I serve, serve, serve the holy." Saying it over and over shows how much his heart is in it. Sadaa kara-o kirtaa-ay means "I do this always."

Abhai daan paava-o purakh daatay means "I receive the gift of fearlessness from the Great Giver." Abhai means without fear. Daan means gift. It is received, not earned.

Mil sangat har gun gaa-ay means joining the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — and singing the One's praises.

Think of a choir. On your own you might feel shy. But standing with everyone, singing together, the nervousness melts. That quiet courage is the gift.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you feel braver just being around?
