Raag Devgandhaari
Commentary

Raag Devgandhaari, Shabad 26, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

"With each and every breath, I meditate in remembrance on my God; I live continually in the Society of the Saints."

The Arc

The one desire — to be the servant of the good (Pauri0, carrying Pause and first block); remembrance on every breath, the Name as sole wealth yielding joy (Pauri2). (Files: Pauri0 and Pauri2.)

Key Vocabulary

  • amrit vela / early hours — the ambrosial pre-dawn of deepest practice.
  • saas saas / with each breath — simran woven into respiration (see Naam).
  • anand / joy — the unconditioned joy of the Name (see Anand).

Themes and Cross-Connections

"Wish only for good company" is the raag's clearest Sat Sangat statement. Breath-by-breath remembrance links to Naam-as-breath (B00C3034, 3047). Name-as-only-wealth links to The Merchant of the Name.

For Raag Devgandhaari

Distills the raag's whole desire into one line: nearness to the good. And its whole practice into one measure: the breath.
