Granting His Grace, the Lord has made me His own; I was on fire, but now I am cooled. ||1||

In plain words

The saints scatter the darkness of not-knowing; the teacher is the giver of the gift of life.

By grace the One made me its own; I was on fire, and now I am cooled.

The restless burning of always wanting and worrying can actually be cooled and quieted — and it comes as a gift, like light simply scattering the dark.
The deeper layer

"I was on fire, but now I am cooled" is one of the raag's most felt images. The fire is the burning of craving, anxiety, restlessness — the inner heat that never quite lets you rest (the same fire Aasaa calls the world's "ocean of fire"). And the relief is coolness: the specific sensation of that heat being quenched. Notice it is not achieved but given — grace "made me its own," and the cooling followed. The saints and the teacher scatter the darkness the way a lamp does, not by fighting it but simply by bringing light. Where light comes, dark was never a real substance; it just wasn't there yet.

A Question to Sit With

What does the 'fire' of always wanting more feel like? What would it feel like to be cooled and calm instead?
