Sikhism·Raag Devgandhaari·Shabad 39
Verse 2 of 3

I have looked in so many ways, but there is no other like the Lord.

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੰਮਾ ਕਵਨ ਮਹਿੰਮਾ ਮਨੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੋਊ ॥
agam aga(n)maa kavan mahi(n)maa man jeevai sun souoo ||
He is the most unfathomable of the unfathomable; who can chant His Praises? My mind lives by hearing news of Him.
ਚਾਰਿ ਆਸਰਮ ਚਾਰਿ ਬਰੰਨਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ਸੇਵਤੋਊ ॥੧॥
chaar aasaram chaar bara(n)naa mukat bhe sevatouoo ||1||
People in the four stages of life, and in the four social classes are liberated, by serving You, Lord. ||1||

In plain words

Deepest of the deep — who could sing its praises? My mind stays alive just hearing news of it.

People in every stage of life and every class are set free by serving you, One.

Freedom reaches people of every kind — every background, every class, every stage of life. The One never checks your rank or where you came from before welcoming you.
The deeper layer

"My mind lives by hearing news of Him" — even secondhand word of the One is sustenance (the deep viraha of the raag). And then a great leveling: "people in the four stages of life and the four social classes are liberated." The four varnas were the rigid caste divisions of the society Guru Arjan lived in; the four ashramas were the classical life-stages. He says liberation reaches across all of them — no caste is too low, no station excluded. This is the tradition's radical inclusivity: the One does not check your caste or your class at the door. Freedom is available to everyone, in every rank the world uses to divide people, because the One that fills all lands also belongs to all people.

A Question to Sit With

Why is it important that the deepest freedom is open to everyone, no matter their background or status?
