Raag Dhanaasaree
Commentary

Raag Dhanaasaree, Du-Pada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Good company cools the fevers of the heart; love carries you across the widest water in joy.

The Arc

The verse watches the inner fevers — grasping want, hot anger, tangled greed — burn down to nothing in kind and holy company, and offers everything one has as gladly given for such company. The Rahao and close, merged in the second file, promise passage across the frightening ocean of the world not by struggle but in peace, ease, and joy, and bless the very places where the good gather, asking only to bow to them in respect.

Key Vocabulary

  • kaam kroDh bikh jaaray: craving, anger, and greed's poison burned away
  • in oopar lai baaray: everything offered, gladly given
  • bhav niDh paar utaaray: carried across the ocean of the world
  • sookh sahj aanand mangal: peace, ease, joy, celebration
  • Dhan so thaan: blessed is that place

Themes and Cross-Connections

Treating craving, anger, and greed as fevers that cool in good company — rather than sins to be punished — is the project's 'ego as a disease to heal' voice. Crossing the bhav niDh 'in joy' (sookh sahj) rather than by grim effort embodies sahaj, the natural ease of the aligned soul from philosophy.md: the passage is made by love, not by strain.

For Raag Dhanaasaree

The raag's longing becomes a crossing — the wide dark water met and passed through, singing.
