While Here, Listen And Speak Of The One

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਰਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
jab lag dunee-aa rahee-ai naanak kichh sunee-ai kichh kahee-ai.
As long as we are in this world, O Nanak, we should listen, and speak of the Lord.
ਭਾਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਮ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੫॥੨॥
bhaal rahay ham rahan na paa-i-aa jeevti-aa mar rahee-ai. ||5||2||
I have searched, but I have found no way to remain here; so, remain dead while yet alive. ||5||2||

In plain words

As long as we are in this world, let us listen, and speak, of the One.

I looked for a way to stay here forever and found none. So live freely, with the ego already quiet, fully alive and completely unclutched.

Live lightly and awake now: listen, speak of the One, and let the ego go.
The deeper layer

While we are here, let us listen and talk about the One, and let the ego go.

This verse closes the second shabad. Jab lag dunee-aa rahee-ai — as long as we are in the world, kichh sunee-ai kichh kahee-ai, let us listen a little and speak a little about the One. Listening, suniai, and sharing go together again.

Then comes a famous phrase: jeevtiaa mar rahee-ai, "stay dead while alive." It sounds scary, but it is not. It means letting the grabbing, show-off part of us, the ego, fall away right now. Think of putting down a heavy backpack you forgot you were carrying. Then a person lives light and free while fully alive.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to do something with no need to show off about it?
