In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

How do I hold You in mind? I try, and it slips away. My heart aches to.

But the true One made this whole world and makes it beautiful. So how could forgetting the One ever go well for me?

Even wanting to remember, and finding it hard, is itself a kind of longing for the One.
The deeper layer

Sometimes remembering the One feels hard, and the heart aches for it.

The shabad opens with a short blessing, ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad — one Creator, known by the true Guru's grace. Then comes an honest confession. Ki-o simree sivri-aa nahee jaa-ay — how can I remember You, when remembering will not come? It is like a word stuck on the tip of your tongue. The heart tapai, burns, and billaa-ay, cries out, with longing.

Then the verse steadies itself. The One siraj savaaray — creates everything and makes it beautiful. So forgetting such a One could never lead anywhere good.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you care about so much that it is hard to hold it in your mind all the time?
