Look And See How Short The Days

ਅੰਧੇ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇ ਦਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anDhay jeevnaa veechaar daykh kaytay kay dinaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are blind - see and consider, how many days your life shall last. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Wake up, sleeping heart, and look closely. How many days does a life hold? Do not sleep the whole way through.

Open your eyes to how short and how precious the days are.
The deeper layer

Open your eyes and see how short the days are.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, of the second shabad, its center. The word anDhay means blind. Heard gently, it is not an insult. It is a nudge to a heart that has its eyes shut, like a friend tapping your shoulder when you are daydreaming in class.

Veechaar daykh means think and see. It invites us to look honestly at how short time is. Then we can live awake instead of just drifting along.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you do not want to sleep through in your life?
