Death, like a hunter, a butcher, is on the prowl; tell me, what can we do? ||1||

In plain words

Day by day, hour by hour, time keeps moving, and my body slowly changes and grows older. That is just how life works.

Time is always walking beside me. So I ask myself a good question: knowing this, how should I live? What matters most while I'm here?

Time keeps moving — so ask how to live well while it does.
The deeper layer

Time keeps moving, so the question to ask is how to live well while it does.

Din tay pahar pahar tay gharee-aa: the days turn into pahar, the watches of the day, and the watches into gharee-aa, short hours. It is like an hourglass. You can watch the sand slip through, grain by grain. Aav ghatai tan chheejai: life runs its course, and the body grows older.

Kabir then pictures time as kaal ahayree, a hunter who is always nearby. The picture is there to wake us up, not to scare us. The part to keep is his question: kahhu kavan biDh keejai, tell me, what should we do? Knowing time is moving, how will I live well now?

A Question to Sit With

If you felt how precious time is, what would you do differently today?
