Verse 1 of 3

Like Water Poured Into Water

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਕਾਹੋ ॥
jo jan bhaa-o bhagat kachh jaanai taa ka-o achraj kaaho.
That humble being, who knows even a little about loving devotional worship - what surprises are there for him?
ji-o jal jal meh pais na niksai ti-o dhur mili-o julaaho. ||1||
Like water, dripping into water, which cannot be separated out again, so is the weaver Kabir, with softened heart, merged into the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

Once you know even a little about loving with your whole heart, nothing can shake you anymore.

Think of a drop of water poured into a river — you cannot scoop it back out; it has become the river. That is what happened to me. My heart softened, and I melted into the One like water into water.

Love softens the heart until it pours into the One like water into water.
The deeper layer

Love softens the heart until it becomes one with the One, like water poured into water.

Jo jan bhaa-o bhagat kachh jaanai taa ka-o achraj kaaho: for someone who knows even a little of loving devotion, what is left to be surprised about? Then comes the picture: ji-o jal jal meh pais na niksai. Water poured into water cannot be taken out again. Pour a glass of water into a lake, then try to find your glass of water. It has become the lake.

Ti-o dhur mili-o julaaho: in the same way, the weaver, his heart softened, has merged into the One. Kabir calls himself julaaho, a weaver, naming his own humble trade. The one who merges here is a weaver, not a priest.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when you love something so much you forget where you end and it begins?
