Verse 1 of 5

Remember, Remember, Remember

ਰਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
raam simar raam simar raam simar bhaa-ee.
Remember the Lord, remember the Lord, remember the Lord in meditation, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਡਤੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam simran bin boodtay aDhikaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without remembering the Lord's Name in meditation, a great many are drowned. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Remember the One, remember the One, remember the One, dear friend.

Without remembering the Naam, so many get swept away. Holding the Naam keeps you steady, like a rope in a strong current.

Remembering the One is the steady thing to hold in a strong current.
The deeper layer

Remembering the One is the steady thing to hold when life pulls hard.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Raam simar raam simar raam simar bhaa-ee: remember the One, remember, remember, dear friend. Simar means to remember with love. Said three times, it becomes a rhythm, like a heartbeat.

Raam naam simran bin boodtay aDhikaa-ee: without remembering the Name, a great many are swept away. Picture a swimmer in a strong river, holding onto a rope. The rope keeps them steady. Simran, loving remembrance, is that rope.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel steady when everything around you feels like a lot?
