Verse 5 of 5

The Only Wealth My Heart Keeps

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਅਵਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਮਾ ॥
kahat kabeer avar nahee kaamaa.
Says Kabir, nothing else is of any use.
ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨ ਧਨ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੪॥੪॥
hamrai man Dhan raam ko naamaa. ||4||4||
Within my mind is the wealth of the Lord's Name. ||4||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I look closely, I see there is nothing else I need to chase.

The one treasure I carry everywhere, that never empties out, is the One's Name held in my mind. That is the wealth I am rich with.

The richest thing you can own is the Name you carry inside.
The deeper layer

The Name is the one treasure that never runs out.

Kahat kabeer avar nahee kaamaa: Kabir says, nothing else is of real use. Hamrai man Dhan raam ko naamaa: in my mind is the Dhan, the wealth, of the One's Name.

Think of a piggy bank that can never be broken or emptied. That is the Name. The whole shabad has been pointing here, to the riches that last.

A Question to Sit With

What's a kind of wealth that has nothing to do with money?
